Simon & Garfunkel - Greatest Hits

Simon and Garfunkel was a folk rock duo composed by Paul Simon and Arthur "Art" Garfunkel. Simon and Garfunkel were very popular artists in the 60s. Some of their best-known songs are "The Sound of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson »(« Mrs. Robinson ») and« Bridge over Troubled Water »(« Bridge over turbulent water »). In addition, they have received several Grammys and are included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The beginning

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel grew up in the neighborhood of Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, New York. They were classmates at the Forest Hills High School in New York, and they sealed their friendship during childhood. In 1955 Simon composed some songs, including "Hey, Schoolgirl" (the first song of the duo), 1 and he proposed to Garfunkel to form a duo with only 16 years old, together they started with the name of Tom and Jerry (as the drawings animated), Simon was Jerry Landis (the surname was taken from Sue Landis, a girl he was dating at the time) and Arthur was Tom Graph (Garfunkel liked to "make graphs" -to graph, in English- to see the evolution of the albums in the charts).

They began to write their own songs in 1957. There was a song that seemed to have good acceptance among the students when interpreting it in the dances of the institute, they took a risk and decided to record a demo of that song. Shortly after they released their first professional recording Hey, Schoolgirl (whose B-side was "Dancin 'Wild"), under the name of Tom & Jerry. Sid Prosen, a talent scout who listened to the song, promised to turn them into great artists, reached an agreement and signed on the label Big Records. The album sold 100,000 copies, reaching 57th place on Billboard magazine lists and including the top 10 in New York. Simon and Garfunkel have acknowledged having taken influences from the group The Everly Brothers, and in much of their songs, such as "Hey, Schoolgirl", that influence is very remarkable.
On November 22, 1957, they performed on the American Bandstand program, a live television program, playing the theme Hey, Schoolgirl after Jerry Lee Lewis performed "Great Balls of Fire." They also performed on the Alan Freed show.
In 1958, Paul Simon recorded a solo single with the label Big Records, under the nickname of True Taylor, the A side contained "True or False", a composition of his father, while the B-side contained the theme "Teenage Fool » This fact did not please Garfunkel, who took it as an offense and would mark his relationship negatively in the coming years. Throughout 1958 they released several singles under the name of Tom and Jerry, all of them were a resounding failure and did not sell as expected. After finishing high school, the artists split up into different universities. Simon enrolled at Queens College to graduate in English, and Garfunkel did the same at Columbia University to study mathematics.

Attempts as soloists

In 1959, Paul Simon meets Carole Klein, a classmate with whom he formed a duo called The Co-Sines. Paul played guitar and bass, and Carole played piano and sometimes drums. Carole also composed, and they dedicated to record demos for the artists of the time. But Carole, who had to change her name to Carole King, began to compose her own songs, with which she achieved a resounding success, and continued her solo career. This experience earned Simon to become familiar with everything related to the recording studios, marking him in a positive way in his later publications.  Later he starts in a frustrated attempt as a soloist under the name of Jerry Landis. In those years he was composing several subjects, in 1962 he composed The Lone Teen Ranger, a parody of a television series called The Lone Ranger, with which he reached the 97th place in the lists. In 1960 he sang with the group The Mystics, but they were not successful. In 1960 Simon joins the group The Crew Cuts, they changed their name to Tico & The Triumphs, but the singles released were not successful and in 1963 he left the group.

Later he would try his luck with Paul Kane's name, but he was not successful either.

Art Garfunkel recorded some songs for the record label Octavia Records while attending college, under the pseudonym Artie Garr. He recorded some ballads composed by himself, such as Private World. However, none of these singles reaped success and could not prosper as a soloist.

In early 1964, Simon leaves law school in Brooklyn and goes to London, where he meets Kathy, and falls in love with her. That woman was a strong support for Simon, who composed many of his most famous songs inspired by her, and storing many of the themes that would appear later in his later albums.

During his stay in the United Kingdom, Simon was dedicated to play for some nightclub clubs in Liverpool, London, Cambridge, Widness, and many other cities, participating even in the Folk Festival, held in the Scottish city of Edinburgh. That same year he recorded a single with the record label Oriole Records, the single was composed of two songs, "Carlos Domínguez" and "He Was My Brother", and was published in the United States under the nickname of Paul Kane
